Kaye McAbee was the organist at the First Congregational Church in the spring of 1951 when he requested vacation time for the two Sundays following Easter. The Director of Music, Louise Nelson, asked me to fill in for Kaye for those two weeks. I was 14 at the time and had been taking organ lessons for two years. The church was doing two Sunday morning services at that time, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. I agreed to fill in for those two weeks, and was glad that it was just for two weeks. However, Kaye never came back, and I had the job until 1956 when I was 20 and went off to Purdue.
I can't imagine living my life without having had this experience. It has opened doors---for one reason or another. (More about this later.)
